In an interview with Billboard, Eddie Van Halen discussed his former cancer scares. We would hate to think our guitar picks could cause anything but great sounds, but Eddie seems to think there’s hidden dangers in them.
Of course, we have our suspicions that the true issue could have been the ‘smoking gun’ in Eddies mouth, but we’re willing to hear him out considering we all use guitar picks.
If anything, it might be time to invest in plastic picks? Or maybe we’ll just stick with our first thoughts about this whole cancer/guitar picks theory. We’ll mention that at the bottom of this post….

Now, speaking to Billboard, Van Halen revealed that he’s given up smoking cigarettes but blames guitar picks for his cancer diagnosis.
“I used metal picks – they’re brass and copper – which I always held in my mouth, in the exact place where I got the tongue cancer,” Van Halen said.
“Plus, I basically live in a recording studio that’s filled with electromagnetic energy. So that’s one theory. I mean, I was smoking and doing a lot of drugs and a lot of everything. But at the same time, my lungs are totally clear. This is just my own theory, but the doctors say it’s possible.”
